Old Cemeteries of the Town of Balta

Welcome to the Old Cemeteries project for Balta, Ukraine.

Balta is a town in the former Russian government of Podolia, nowadays Odessa province, Ukraine. The history of the city tracks back to the 15th century and even earlier. Group of settlements and forts on the former border of Turkish Ottoman empire and Polish Rzecz Pospolita became an important trade center of Russian empire and Ukraine. This fact made the place to be attractive to various people that were creating our history.

There are 6 cemeteries still existing in the town of Balta.

Four of them are Christian and two are Jewish. Unfortunately, there are almost no preserved gravestones from the first centuries of the town's history. However there is still solid number of tombstones from the 19th and early beginning of the 20th centuries.
